The Food Herald Team stopped in at the newly opened Oak Wine Bar and Cocktail Lounge on Hillcrest Avenue for a taste of their delectable bites! The intimate and soothing ambiance created by the cushioned booths, glass architecture and dimly lit adjustable overhead lights. It’s definitely a treat for a cozy evening with close friends or that special someone. Although they’re a wine bar, they do have a diverse appetizer menu called “bites”, if you’re feeling a bit peckish and would like something to balance with your cocktail or wine. Either way the staff at Oak Wine Bar will be there to give you a warm welcome and make you feel right at home while you try some of our favourites.
Served in a martini glass on a bed of shredded lettuce, just the sight of this appealing appetiser will have your mouth anxious to delve in. The beauty of this dynamic dish was balanced by the taste and textures of the luscious shrimps. A light crunch on the outside meets your taste buds with the succulent shrimp pieces and gives you an edge of hot sweet chilli sauce drizzled atop each shrimp.
Firecracker Spring Rolls
Now these are undeniably distinguishing spring rolls! The traditional crunchy spring roll casing contained a succulent, flavourful tandoori chicken that was scrumptious to the last bite. However, what really set this dish apart was the accompanying tamarind sauce! The sauce can only be described as ethereal; as a result of the heavenly trance it held us in with its sweet and tangy taste – quite exceptional.
Kudos to the chef at Oak Wine Bar & Lounge because they certainly know how to do a good batter! The Calamari, however, was essentially undetectable due to the superbly light, crunchy and airy bites with a delicate flavour of the calamari and spices in the batter. The pieces were ornately arranged on a chilli garlic sauce that was reminiscent of spicy mayo and we really couldn’t get enough. Heads up: you may want to order two of these when you ask for this appetiser; you won’t be able to stop going back for more and more!
We, at The Food Herald, would recommend this cocktail to anyone who loves a good kick of heat in their drink. Prepare those taste buds for an exciting ride as you experience the fruity taste mixed with the slight tang of passion fruit and the kick of spice from the habanero peppers. However, the tropical aroma of this blend will make you forget that there’s alcohol in it so approach with caution!
